Abstract In 1956, following years of study and debate, Canadian officials decided to construct the Tran-Canada Highway through Rogers Pass on the Selkirk Range. An avalanche hazard evaluation and forecast service was established and, during the winters of 1956-1960, the Department of Public Works maintained a survey crew which continued the avalanche observations. This report contains a summary of those observations and presents recommendations for avalanche defense required to for the protection of the Trans-Canada Highway in winter.
