Abstract On December 28, 1908 an earthquake occurred along the Straits of Messina between the island of Sicily and mainland Italy. In this report, RMS revisits this historic earthquake, summarizing the ground shaking damage and tsunami’s impact. It also considers the susceptibility of the current building stock and its population if the same event occurred today and how well earthquake insurance would aid in recovery efforts.
